Steel Wire Braided (SWB) Data Cable

Cat 6A SWB Cable for Mechanically Protected 10 Gigabit Ethernet Networks

Cat 6A SWB Cable combines Category 6A Ethernet transmission with Steel Wire Braid mechanical protection for industrial, infrastructure and physically demanding network routes. ETK Kablo currently manufactures Steel Wire Braided Cat 6A cables in U/UTP, U/FTP and S/FTP architectures, allowing the electromagnetic-screening system to be selected independently from the SWB mechanical layer.

The current Cat 6A SWB range provides transmission performance through 500 MHz for 10GBASE-T networks. Each published construction uses solid copper conductors, a halogen-free inner jacket, steel wire braiding and a halogen-free outer jacket. The electrical core can remain unshielded or include individual foil screens and an overall copper braid according to the selected product.

Steel wire braiding performs a mechanical function. It should not be confused with the tinned copper braid used for electromagnetic screening in S/FTP cable. This distinction is particularly important when specifying industrial Ethernet cable because one construction can contain both types of braid for completely different engineering purposes.

What Is a Cat 6A SWB Cable?

A Cat 6A SWB cable is a Category 6A balanced copper Ethernet cable with a Steel Wire Braid around the inner-jacketed network cable core.

The steel braid adds mechanical reinforcement for fixed installations where the cable faces greater physical exposure than conventional structured cabling.

The Ethernet core retains Category 6A transmission characteristics through 500 MHz. Therefore, the SWB layer changes the mechanical construction without creating a different Ethernet category.

What Does SWB Mean?

SWB means Steel Wire Braid.

ETK Kablo places this braided steel layer outside the inner jacket of the data-cable core and then applies a halogen-free outer jacket.

The SWB layer primarily addresses mechanical protection. It does not define whether the Ethernet pairs are electrically shielded.

For that reason, a complete cable specification should state both:

  • The Ethernet screening architecture: U/UTP, U/FTP or S/FTP
  • The mechanical construction: Steel Wire Braid (SWB)

ETK Kablo Cat 6A SWB Cable Range

Current Product Ethernet Screening Mechanical Protection
Cat 6A U/UTP LSOH SWB LSOH No dedicated metallic data screen Steel Wire Braid
Cat 6A U/FTP LSOH SWB LSOH Individual Al/PET foil around each pair Steel Wire Braid
Cat 6A S/FTP LSOH SWB LSOH Individual pair foils + overall tinned copper braid Steel Wire Braid

The current published Cat 6A SWB range therefore provides three distinct electromagnetic architectures with the same basic steel-braided mechanical concept.

Cat 6A SWB Cable Construction

The exact internal construction changes according to the selected Ethernet screening system. However, the three current products share the following outer mechanical architecture:

  • Cat 6A Ethernet core
  • UV-resistant halogen-free inner jacket
  • Steel wire braiding
  • UV-resistant halogen-free outer jacket

This arrangement separates the Category 6A transmission core from the steel mechanical layer.

Steel Wire Braid for Mechanical Protection

Steel wire braiding surrounds the inner-jacketed Ethernet core and adds mechanical reinforcement to the complete cable.

This can make a Cat 6A SWB construction relevant for fixed routes where conventional Ethernet cabling faces greater risk of physical exposure.

Potential environments include industrial facilities, infrastructure pathways, technical buildings and other mechanically demanding installations.

The exact route conditions should still determine cable selection. SWB should not automatically be treated as proof of suitability for every underground, direct-burial, chemical or water-exposed installation.

SWB Is Not an Ethernet Shielding Designation

Steel Wire Braid describes mechanical construction rather than the electromagnetic architecture of the data pairs.

For example, the current Cat 6A U/UTP SWB cable has steel wire braiding for mechanical protection but no dedicated metallic screen around the Ethernet pairs.

By contrast, the Cat 6A S/FTP SWB construction contains both electromagnetic screens and a separate steel mechanical braid.

The letters U/UTP, U/FTP and S/FTP should therefore remain separate from the SWB designation during specification.

Steel Braid vs Tinned Copper Braid

Cat 6A S/FTP SWB cable contains two different braided metallic components.

Braid Material Main Function
S/FTP Overall Screen Tinned copper Electromagnetic screening
SWB Mechanical Layer Steel wire Mechanical reinforcement

The two layers should never be described as though they perform the same function.

The copper braid forms part of the data-cable EMC architecture. The steel braid sits outside the inner jacket and provides mechanical protection.

Cat 6A U/UTP SWB Cable

Cat 6A U/UTP SWB Cable combines an electrically unshielded Category 6A core with Steel Wire Braid mechanical protection.

The current ETK Kablo construction includes:

  • Electrolytic solid copper conductors
  • Solid polyethylene insulation
  • Four twisted pairs
  • Star-shaped separator
  • Halogen-free inner jacket
  • Steel wire braiding
  • Halogen-free outer jacket

No dedicated Al/PET foil or tinned copper electromagnetic braid surrounds the Ethernet core.

This is an important example of why the terms armored and shielded should not be used interchangeably.

Cat 6A U/FTP SWB Cable

Cat 6A U/FTP SWB Cable combines individually foil-screened twisted pairs with Steel Wire Braid mechanical protection.

The current construction uses:

  • Electrolytic solid copper conductors
  • Foamed polyethylene insulation cladded with solid polyethylene
  • Four twisted pairs
  • Individual Al/PET foil around each pair
  • Tinned copper earthing wire between the screened pairs
  • Halogen-free inner jacket
  • Steel wire braiding
  • Halogen-free outer jacket

The individual pair foils address electromagnetic performance. The separate steel wire braid addresses mechanical exposure.

Cat 6A S/FTP SWB Cable

Cat 6A S/FTP SWB Cable combines extensive electromagnetic screening with a separate Steel Wire Braid mechanical layer.

The current construction includes:

  • Electrolytic solid copper conductors
  • Foamed polyethylene insulation cladded with solid polyethylene
  • Individual Al/PET foil around every twisted pair
  • Tinned copper earthing wire
  • Overall tinned copper braid
  • Halogen-free inner jacket
  • Steel wire braiding
  • Halogen-free outer jacket

The pair foils and tinned copper braid form the electromagnetic-screening architecture. The steel wire braid remains a separate mechanical layer.

U/UTP vs U/FTP vs S/FTP Cat 6A SWB

Architecture Individual Pair Foils Overall Copper Braid Steel Wire Braid
U/UTP SWB No No Yes
U/FTP SWB Yes No Yes
S/FTP SWB Yes Yes Yes

The electromagnetic environment should determine the U/UTP, U/FTP or S/FTP architecture. The physical cable route should determine the need for Steel Wire Braid.

Why Is There No F/FTP SWB Product in the Current Range?

ETK Kablo's standard Cat 6A range includes an F/FTP category, but the currently published Cat 6A SWB category contains only U/UTP, U/FTP and S/FTP products.

A project requiring an F/FTP core together with Steel Wire Braid should therefore be confirmed with ETK Kablo rather than assumed to be part of the standard published range.

500 MHz Cat 6A SWB Performance

The current Cat 6A SWB products publish transmission characteristics through 500 MHz.

Relevant parameters include:

  • Insertion loss
  • Near-end crosstalk (NEXT)
  • Power-sum NEXT
  • Equal-level far-end crosstalk
  • Power-sum equal-level far-end crosstalk
  • Return loss
  • Characteristic impedance
  • Propagation velocity

The SWB layer does not increase the Category 6A frequency range. It provides mechanical protection around a 500 MHz Ethernet core.

Cat 6A SWB Cable for 10 Gigabit Ethernet

Cat 6A SWB cable can support 10GBASE-T 10 Gigabit Ethernet when the complete installed structured-cabling channel meets the applicable Category 6A requirements.

Potential applications include:

  • Industrial Ethernet
  • Factory networks
  • Energy infrastructure
  • Utility facilities
  • Transport infrastructure
  • Industrial automation
  • IP surveillance
  • Technical buildings
  • Commercial infrastructure
  • Mechanically exposed 10 Gigabit Ethernet routes

The steel braid changes the mechanical construction but does not extend Ethernet bandwidth or standardized copper transmission distance.

10GBASE-T Channel Length

Category 6A is designed to support 10GBASE-T over a full balanced-copper structured-cabling channel when the complete installed system meets the applicable requirements.

A typical channel can extend to 100 meters, normally including up to 90 meters of permanent-link cable together with patch and equipment cords.

Steel Wire Braid does not increase this standardized transmission distance.

Cat 6A SWB Cable for Industrial Ethernet

Industrial environments can expose network cables to mechanical stress, electrical equipment and demanding routing conditions.

Steel Wire Braided Cat 6A cable can provide additional mechanical protection for fixed 10 Gigabit Ethernet routes through factories, technical facilities and infrastructure pathways.

Electromagnetic screening should still be selected separately. U/UTP can suit controlled electromagnetic conditions, while U/FTP and S/FTP provide additional screening where the project requires it.

Cat 6A SWB Cable for Industrial Automation

Industrial automation networks increasingly use Ethernet between controllers, switches, machines and supervisory systems.

A mechanically protected Cat 6A construction can be relevant where the network route passes through physically exposed technical areas.

The SWB layer addresses physical protection, while the selected U/UTP, U/FTP or S/FTP core determines the electromagnetic-screening architecture.

Steel Wire Braid should not be interpreted as qualification for continuous-flex, drag-chain or robotic motion unless the exact product documentation states those capabilities.

Cat 6A SWB Cable for IP CCTV

High-resolution IP surveillance can require substantial bandwidth together with Power over Ethernet.

Cat 6A SWB can provide additional mechanical protection for network routes serving cameras, switches and other surveillance infrastructure.

The required electrical screening should follow the electromagnetic conditions of the route. PoE requirements should be evaluated independently from the mechanical armor.

Cat 6A SWB Cable for Cable Trays

Industrial cable trays can carry Ethernet, control, instrumentation and power infrastructure within the same facility.

Where the Cat 6A route faces increased physical exposure, a Steel Wire Braided construction can provide an additional mechanical layer.

U/FTP or S/FTP versions can add electromagnetic screening where the project requires screened networking.

Applicable separation requirements from power circuits should still be followed.

Cat 6A SWB Cable for Outdoor and Infrastructure Routes

The current ETK Kablo Cat 6A SWB products use UV-resistant halogen-free inner and outer jackets.

This construction can be relevant to demanding infrastructure routes where mechanical protection forms part of the specification.

However, outdoor, underground and buried installations can introduce moisture, water, chemical and environmental requirements that are separate from mechanical steel braiding.

Those conditions should be defined during cable selection.

Can Cat 6A SWB Cable Be Installed Underground?

Steel Wire Braid can provide useful mechanical reinforcement for underground duct and infrastructure projects where the route specification requires it.

However, underground routes can also involve standing water, moisture ingress, pulling loads and other environmental conditions.

The complete route should therefore be specified rather than assuming that the presence of steel braid alone qualifies the cable for every underground application.

Can Cat 6A SWB Cable Be Direct Buried?

Direct-burial suitability depends on the complete cable construction and installation conditions.

Steel Wire Braid provides mechanical protection, but direct burial can also require specific moisture, water-blocking, crush, tensile, chemical or environmental characteristics.

Projects requiring direct burial should provide the route conditions during the RFQ so that ETK Kablo can confirm the appropriate construction.

Cat 6A SWB vs SWA Cable

ETK Kablo provides both Steel Wire Braided and Steel Wire Armored Cat 6A families.

Feature SWB SWA
Full Name Steel Wire Braid Steel Wire Armor
Mechanical Architecture Braided steel-wire layer Steel wire armor layer
Main Function Mechanical reinforcement Mechanical protection
Category Frequency 500 MHz 500 MHz
10GBASE-T Yes, within compliant channel Yes, within compliant channel
Current Core Options U/UTP, U/FTP, S/FTP U/UTP, U/FTP, S/FTP

The correct mechanical construction should follow the cable-route specification rather than assuming that one steel design is universally preferable.

Cat 6A SWB vs Standard Cat 6A Cable

Feature Cat 6A SWB Standard Cat 6A
Frequency 500 MHz 500 MHz
10GBASE-T Supported within compliant channel Supported within compliant channel
Steel Mechanical Protection Yes No
Electrical Screening Depends on U/UTP, U/FTP or S/FTP Depends on selected architecture
Main Selection Driver Mechanical exposure + network requirement Network and electromagnetic requirements

The Steel Wire Braid is therefore the defining additional feature. It does not create a higher network category than Cat 6A.

Cat 6A SWB vs Aerial Ethernet Cable

Steel Wire Braid and aerial messenger constructions solve different mechanical problems.

Construction Main Function
Steel Wire Braid Mechanical protection around the cable core
Aerial Messenger Supports an overhead cable span

An SWB cable should not automatically be treated as an aerial cable. Likewise, a messenger-supported Ethernet cable should not automatically be described as armored.

Cat 6A SWB vs Armored Fiber Optic Cable

Steel-braided copper Ethernet and armored fiber optic cables address different network requirements.

Cat 6A copper can provide conventional 10GBASE-T connectivity and can form part of compatible Power over Ethernet systems.

Fiber optic cable provides electrical isolation, immunity to electromagnetic interference and substantially longer transmission distances.

For long industrial links, building-to-building infrastructure or electrically complex routes, project engineers should compare copper and fiber architectures before final specification.

LSOH Inner and Outer Jackets

The three current Cat 6A SWB products use halogen-free inner and outer jackets.

The published product documentation includes applicable tests for smoke density, flame retardancy, corrosive-gas characteristics and halogen content.

LSOH or LSZH describes material and reaction-to-fire characteristics. It does not automatically establish fire-resistant circuit integrity such as FE180 or PH120.

Cat 6A SWB Electrical Characteristics

Cat 6A SWB Mechanical Characteristics

The current Cat 6A SWB product pages publish:

  • Steel wire braiding
  • Halogen-free inner jacket
  • Halogen-free outer jacket
  • Minimum bending radius: 8xD
  • Operating temperature: -20°C to +60°C

Exact cable diameter, weight and packing requirements should be confirmed from the selected product documentation during quotation.

Cat 6A SWB Cable Standards

The current ETK Kablo Cat 6A SWB product documentation references:

  • ANSI/TIA-568-C.2
  • IEC 61156-5
  • IEC 11801

The published electrical-performance tables extend through 500 MHz.

Project specifications can require different standard editions, CPR classifications or additional approvals, so procurement teams should verify the requirements for the exact supplied construction.

Cat 6A SWB Cable and Power over Ethernet

Cat 6A SWB cable can form part of compatible Power over Ethernet systems.

The steel braid does not determine PoE capability. Remote powering depends primarily on the electrical and thermal characteristics of the copper pairs.

Relevant design factors include:

  • Conductor resistance
  • Resistance unbalance
  • Network distance
  • Cable bundle size
  • Ambient temperature
  • Installation pathway
  • Required PoE level

Mechanical protection should therefore be evaluated separately from the PoE electrical and thermal design.

How to Specify Cat 6A SWB Cable

A complete RFQ should define network performance, electromagnetic screening and mechanical requirements separately.
